Poverty Alleviation and sustainable livelihoods

Jordan is a small country with a few natural resources, and a very limited water supply. Less than 7% of the land is arable, and as a result, Jordan imports approximately 80% of its food. In spite of Jordan’s medium level ranking in the United Nations Development Index, Jordan faces various challenges to its development efforts, including; unemployment, inadequate health services and rising poverty.

Sustainable Livelihoods and Poverty Alleviation is particularly relevant to Jordan. Over recent years, increasing poverty and the widening gap between rich and poor has become a priority concern for Jordan, The Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) has been developed globally as an innovative approach to tackle the problem of poverty analysis.
